Apple Day in Bagnaria, located in the lush hills of the Oltrepò Pavese, is an annual event dedicated to one of the area's most cherished fruits: the apple (mela) held in Piazza Aldo Moro. The festival centers around the promotional sale of local apples directly from the hands of local farmers inside the town’s covered fruit and vegetable market (Mercato Ortofrutticolo).
Anyone purchasing apples at the market receives raffle tickets for a prize drawing—featuring apples as the reward! A Day of Markets and Tastes Beyond the central apple market, visitors can enjoy a local street market just outside the main square. Here, artisanal vendors and food producers from the area offer typical enogastronomic products (wine and food) and various local goods throughout the day. At lunchtime, the local Pro Loco (community-run association) organizes a food stall serving traditional dishes, followed in the afternoon by live music with Ermanno, adding a festive soundtrack to the day.
Apple Varieties and Seasonal Produce The region is known for its wide range of apple varieties, including: Golden Delicious Stark (red apple) Pomella Genovese Renetta Annurca Fuji Champagne Granny Smith
In addition to apples, visitors will find a selection of other local seasonal fruits such as pears, chestnuts, and honey, all at Km 0—meaning directly from local producers, with no middlemen. Promoting Local Identity and the Territory Over the years, the event has become much more than a celebration of apples. It now serves as a platform to promote the entire cultural and agricultural heritage of Bagnaria and its surroundings. Along with cultivating cherries, apples are considered one of the area’s signature niche products. But the festival also highlights the value of all typical local products, supporting the work of local producers, the Pro Loco, and regional institutions in a shared effort to: Showcase the natural, historical, and artistic heritage of Upper Oltrepò Attract tourists from outside the province Strengthen the local economy, including artisan and commercial activities
Food stand opens at 12:30 PM - Live music continues throughout the afternoon
