Welcome to Bordolano, a charming town in Lombardy that covers just over eight square kilometers and is home to about 560 residents.
Located seventeen kilometers northwest of Cremona, Bordolano sits along the banks of the Oglio River, right on the border with the province of Brescia. The village lies within Oglio North Park, a beautifully preserved natural area perfect for those who love riverside landscapes and rich biodiversity.
The village's origins go back to ancient times. Some historians identify it with the Roman fortress of Bedriacum, which Tacitus mentioned in his Histories.
Over the centuries, Bordolano has experienced many changes of fortune. In the 7th century, Agilulf, King of the Lombards, granted it to the Count of Brescia. Later, under Charlemagne, it returned to Cremona's control. The village was destroyed and rebuilt several times, and in the 15th century, it was ultimately occupied by the Venetians under Francesco Gonzaga.
Today, the local economy is based on both agriculture and industry. The fertile plains are ideal for growing cereals, legumes, and oilseeds. Bordolano also has a thriving manufacturing sector, especially in producing copper, steel, and other fittings used in heating and plumbing systems.
A key feature of the area is the Stogit gas storage facility. In addition to playing a strategic role in national energy security, the site is known for its environmental efforts. Over forty thousand shrubs have been planted to help it blend into the landscape, along with tall trees and several small artificial lakes that gently punctuate the countryside.
As part of the Oglio North Park, Bordolano is crossed by many walking trails. Along these paths, visitors can admire the typical flora of Lombardy’s river ecosystems and observe animals in their natural environment. The woods are filled with poplars, willows, and black locusts, while fallow deer, foxes, and many species of water birds are commonly seen.
But Bordolano is more than just nature. The local community is active and close-knit, especially during festivals. On July 25th, the town celebrates its patron saint, Saint James the Apostle. At the end of March, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Snow hosts the traditional Blessing of the Cyclists—an event deeply cherished by locals and cycling enthusiasts from across the region.
Bordolano is the perfect destination for those seeking the peace and charm of a historic village, where local traditions blend with nature's simple, authentic beauty.
