6 - Sanctuary of Saint Mary of the Snow

12th century

Audio Guide Transcript

Just over a kilometer and a half from the village stands the small Sanctuary of Saint Mary of the Snow.

The sanctuary is set on an ancient alluvial terrace of the Oglio River, and it lies in the peaceful countryside next to an old farmhouse that still preserves parts of an important medieval fortress.

The sanctuary's origins remain uncertain. According to local historian Giovanni Battista Penna, it may have been founded in 1127. However, other sources confirm the presence of a Marian chapel on this site since at least the 16th century.

What is certain is that in 1601, the structure was found to be a simple, square-shaped chapel—unconsecrated, with a modest altar and a small bell gable. Even at that time, it appeared fragile and in need of repair.

According to tradition, the sanctuary was established around a deeply venerated image of the Virgin Mary.

In 1672, it underwent a significant restoration that transformed its appearance. While preserving its original single-nave layout, it was enhanced with a new coffered ceiling and a small dome, adorned with four beautiful frescoes illustrating key episodes from the life of the Virgin: the Nativity, the Adoration of the Three Wise Man, the Purification of Mary, and the Visitation. A small square bell tower was built beside the church that same year.

Around this time, the title Saint Mary of the Snow began to be used—an echo of the famous Roman basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, traditionally said to have been built following a miraculous snowfall in summer.

A second major restoration was carried out in 1807 to repair damage caused by the 1802 earthquake. Recently, the sanctuary has been further enriched through the work of painter Giovanni Misani, who led restoration efforts and created the striking mosaic of the Virgin, which is now displayed on the façade.

Above the altar, a precious wooden statue of the Madonna and Child is inside the sanctuary. Introduced in 1788, the statue replaced the original painted image once found on the back wall. The many ex-votos preserved inside bear witness to the enduring devotion of the local faithful.

An interesting link connects the sanctuary to the world of sport: in recent decades, several local cycling groups have chosen Saint Mary of the Snow as their patron. They gather with the townspeople yearly for the solemn celebration on the first Sunday after August 5th.

The sanctuary is a true jewel of spirituality and history, nestled in the quiet of the Lombard countryside. This place invites reflection and brings together faith, art, tradition, and sport.
