Located at an altitude of about 800 meters on the mountain that shares its name, roughly 4 kilometers from the center of Casnigo, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Erbia is a deeply cherished site of local devotion.

According to tradition, around the year 1550, a much-revered image of the Madonna and Child was painted on the wall of a farmer’s cottage.

As many pilgrims came to pray before the image, they trampled the surrounding fields. Upset by the damage to his crops, the farmer scratched the image with a hoe — but on the night of August 5th, the painting miraculously reappeared.

A second miracle is said to have occurred in 1839. On August 6th of that year, a young boy named Luigi Rossi sought shelter under the portico of the small church during a violent storm. Frightened, he was welcomed by a woman holding a child, who comforted him and gave him bread — a gesture that, to this day, is seen as a symbol of Mary’s maternal care.

Between the 18th and 19th centuries, a small church was built around the wall of the original farmhouse that held the sacred image. The sanctuary was later expanded at the end of the 19th century.

Its interior, designed in the Baroque style with a Latin cross floor plan, is crowned by a painted dome. The sanctuary also preserves a remarkable relic: the last cassock worn by Pope Saint John Paul II, displayed in a glass case. It has since become an object of pilgrimage. Many votive offerings — tokens left in gratitude for answered prayers — are also kept here, bearing witness to centuries of heartfelt devotion.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Erbia can be reached by a 4-kilometer paved road or by a scenic but moderately challenging mule track that winds through meadows and woods.

This site remains a significant spiritual landmark for the community, offering visitors a peaceful place for reflection, surrounded by natural beauty.
