1 - Fratellanza Theatre

1922

Audio Guide Transcript

The Fratellanza Theatre is a charming Art Nouveau–style venue built between 1921 and 1922. At the time, the property had already been leased to the Circolo Fratellanza (Brotherhood Circle), a mutual aid society founded in 1904. The association itself later purchased it.

Mutual aid societies were nonprofit organizations that emerged in the 19th century to provide mutual support among members during times of illness, injury, or hardship. These societies played a vital role in the social fabric of the time, fostering solidarity and community care. The Fratellanza Society, now updated to comply with current legal standards, remains active and engaged in the life of the Casnigo community.

The Fratellanza Theatre is well known for its elegant architecture and finely crafted interior, reflecting the distinctive style of the Art Nouveau period.

The interior decorations were painted in 1922 by artist Michele Frana. Thanks to a careful restoration carried out in 2005, these original artworks are still visible today.

One of the theatre’s most unique features is the motto Ludendo Docet — “Teaching through play” — displayed above the stage. It captures the venue’s mission to combine education with entertainment. Over the years, the theatre has hosted a wide range of cultural events, including plays, concerts, and art performances, becoming a beloved gathering place for the local community.

Today, the theatre remains a vibrant cultural hub. It is managed by the nonprofit association, which continues to organize performances and events that keep alive the spirit of social engagement and community building launched more than a century ago.
