Audio Guide Transcript

The former Church of the Holy Spirit is located in the historic center of Casnigo.

Its construction took place in several phases, beginning in the early 16th century and continuing through the 18th century, with at least three significant expansions.

From its earliest days, in the early 1500s, the church was closely linked to the Confraternity of the White Penitents. This lay brotherhood remained very active in Casnigo until its suppression under Napoleonic rule in 1806.

The Confraternity of the White Penitents was a lay religious association marked by deep devotion and acts of penance. Its members, known as Penitents, included both men and women who lived lives dedicated to prayer and charity, especially caring for the poor and the sick during times of epidemic. They often practiced self-flagellation as a sign of repentance.

The church features a single nave with a subtle cross-shaped floor plan and a semicircular presbytery with a domed apse. Its façade is modest and gable-shaped.

One distinctive architectural feature is the women’s gallery, a raised space overlooking the nave. Supported by two stone columns and covered with small intersecting barrel vaults, it was used by members of the lay confraternity of Saint Mary Magdalene.

The former Church of the Holy Spirit now serves as a versatile venue for a variety of events. It regularly hosts cultural gatherings, art exhibitions, and musical performances.
