Audio Guide Transcript

The Church of Saint Sylvester is the parish church of Chiaverano, located in the heart of the Canavese region. Its original construction dates back to the 13th century, though it underwent significant expansion during the 17th and 18th centuries.

After being looted by French troops, the church was rebuilt between 1741 and 1744. In 1764, a striking stone bell tower was added, reaching a height of 65 meters. The original wooden dome was destroyed in a fire in 1834 and replaced in 1848 with a masonry structure.

The brick front is divided into two levels and topped with a pediment, at the center of which stands the statue of Saint Sylvester. On the right side of the building, a painted arched walkway survives – it originally adorned the main entrance of the earlier church.

Inside, the architecture is marked by brick pilasters, red wall panels, and decorative moldings in yellow and gray. The richly decorated presbytery features a marble balustrade and a grand main altar crowned by a red and gold canopy. The frescoes depict the four Evangelists and, in the dome, an image of God in glory surrounded by angel musicians. On the side walls, four stucco medallions portray Saint Louis, Saint Joseph, Saint Sylvester, and Saint Theodora.

A particularly notable feature is the church’s organ, a remarkable example of 18th-century Piedmontese craftsmanship. Built between 1793 and 1796 by master organ builder Giovanni Bruna, the instrument has undergone various maintenance and restoration efforts. Between 2005 and 2007, it was carefully restored under the supervision of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage. The restoration was funded by the Italian Episcopal Conference, public and private organizations, and a local citizens' group devoted to preserving the instrument. . ..

The organ is housed in the choir loft above the church entrance and is distinguished by its finely crafted wooden case. With 40 registers and around 1,800 pipes, it offers an extraordinary range of tones and timbres. The instrument has a suspended mechanical action, and the window-type console is at the center of the case’s front panel.
