. Pantano Washhouse is one of the most symbolic landmarks of Avigliano’s history. It is a testament to the town’s early infrastructural development following the end of brigandage in Basilicata. After years of turmoil, the region's pacification allowed the new national government and local administrations to implement modernization projects, bringing it closer to the standards of more developed areas in Italy.

As part of this initiative, the Pantano aqueduct was constructed, and in 1867, the Municipality of Avigliano commissioned the Pantano Washhouse. The entire project followed the design provided by fountain engineer Giuseppe Longhi, who also supervised the construction. Stonemason Vito Manfredi expertly crafted the stone blocks sourced from the quarries of Mount Carmel, while master builder Vito Rosa entrusted the masonry work.

In September 1896, the municipality commissioned engineer Rocco Postiglione to conduct a technical assessment of the Pantano Spring. His report evaluated the volume of water supplied and the potential for increasing its flow, highlighting the washhouse’s vital role in the local community's daily life.

During the 1940s, a reinforced concrete roof was added to protect the washing basins from the elements. However, this covering was removed during a renovation project led by the Province of Potenza, completed in 2002, which restored the washhouse to its original appearance.

In 2021, the Municipality of Avigliano entrusted the management of the washhouse and its surrounding area to the cultural association " Women's Coordination Group ", following official authorization issued by the Province of Potenza on August 5 of that year.

Today, the Pantano Washhouse is more than just a historical relic—it has become a place of cultural engagement and community gathering, a symbol of Avigliano’s commitment to preserving its history and traditions.
