. in, a stunning panoramic location on Montagnola, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is one of the spiritual hearts of Avigliano and a deeply revered site in Basilicata. Devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel dates back to the 16th century, but it was the 1694 earthquake that significantly strengthened this bond. According to tradition, the people of Avigliano prayed for the Virgin’s protection, and historical records indicate that the town suffered minimal damage compared to neighboring areas.
A chapel and confraternity dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel were founded in 1696, Over the centuries, many miracles and divine protections have been attributed to the Virgin, including the earthquake of December 16, 1857, when the town was once again spared from destruction. Since then, an annual procession has carried the Our Lady of Mount Carmel statue through the streets to commemorate this event.
Due to its exposed location, the sanctuary has undergone numerous restorations and expansions throughout its history, particularly during the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1927, the exterior was clad in square-cut stone blocks sourced from local mountain quarries while preserving its two 18th-century stone portals. These portals, adorned with beautifully carved wooden doors, were crafted by Avigliano artisan Vito Salvatore.
Inside, the sanctuary maintains a simple and intimate atmosphere. Despite its 19th-century dating, the altar retains 18th-century stylistic elements, linking it to the two side altars. The altars initially came from the Church of the Convent of Saint Joseph, which was demolished in 1960.
During the Great Jubilee of 2000, the sanctuary underwent significant renovations. The forecourt, built in the 1970s, was later expanded and enhanced with new facilities, including a hostel and visitor accommodations. These improvements transformed the sanctuary into a place of worship and a welcoming site for pilgrims and visitors, ensuring its role as a spiritual and cultural landmark in Avigliano.
