Unlike Bitonto and Palombaio, which are dedicated to the Immaculate Virgin, the village of Mariotto honors Our Lady of Sorrows. The church was consecrated on February 4, 1905, in a solemn liturgical ceremony, with heartfelt participation from the entire community.

The first place of worship in the area was a medieval chapel dedicated to Saint Peter. As the population rapidly grew over the 19th century, it became clear that a larger church was needed.

Once the plans were finalized in 1897, the bishop laid the first stone and agreed to finance the construction, honoring the community’s wish to dedicate the church to Our Lady of Sorrows, already venerated as the patroness of Mariotto.

The townspeople contributed with great personal sacrifice, and donations came in from many sources, allowing construction to move forward. However, the church remained unfinished, lacking flooring, plasterwork, and windows. In 1902, the Municipality of Bitonto stepped in to fund its completion. On November 16 of that year, the nearly completed church was officially consecrated, and the finishing works were finalized by 1904.

Architecturally, the church draws inspiration from Romanesque design, expressed through simplicity and clean lines. The façade is dominated by a central portal topped with a sculpted lunette depicting Our Lady of Sorrows flanked by two adoring angels. Above the portal, in the central triple window, there was once a clock that rang the small bells and marked the rhythm of daily life.

The church features a single nave divided by three arches and covered with groin vaults. Above the entrance stands a wooden choir loft that houses the organ and once accommodated the choir. Near the side entrances, two elegant holy water fonts welcome the faithful.

In the presbytery, a marble high altar takes center stage. Above it, in a niche framed by a chorus of angels, stands the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows—a moving image of devotion that still represents the spiritual heart of the community today.
