Scaraggi–Labini Palace still stands today as a powerful symbol of the wealth and prestige once held by the Scaraggi family—a dynasty of skilled and influential merchants originally from Naples.
The family arrived in Puglia in the second half of the 13th century and quickly rose to prominence through thriving trade with Dalmatia, Slovenia, Venice, and the Near East. Their economic success eventually earned them the right to display a heraldic crest, a mark of noble distinction.
Several notable figures came from this family. Among them was Antonio, known as Blessed Antonio of Bitonto, a member of the Order of Friars Minor Observants. Another was Francesco, a brave soldier under Gonzalo de Córdoba, who commissioned the construction of the Palace in 1510. Polidoro, a feudal lord of Bitonto, built a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels inside the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi.
The building itself makes a strong visual impression. On the main floor, visitors can still admire beautiful frescoes, while the exterior façade continues to reflect the power and prominence the family once held. The golden lion on a red background—grasping a green branch in its claws—is the family’s emblem, symbolizing strength and longevity throughout the history of Bitonto.
