Inside the former Benedictine-Olivetan convent, the Cultural Association “Battle Academy Museum” has curated a small but evocative museum dedicated to the Battle of Bitonto. The exhibition features relics, objects, and archival material related to the clash outside the city walls on May 25, 1734, between the Spanish army led by the Duke of Montemar and the Austrian forces commanded by the Prince of Belmonte.

The battle was part of the War of the Polish Succession and was decisive in the Bourbon conquest of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The resounding Spanish victory marked the end of Austrian rule in southern Italy and solidified Charles of Bourbon's authority as the new sovereign of Naples.

The museum is housed in an architecturally distinguished building that spans an entire city block and is centered around two graceful inner cloisters. Its origins date back to the 16th century when the structure was commissioned by the Giannone family—most notably by Abbot Antonio Giannone—who envisioned a place where daughters of noble families could embrace a monastic life.

Today, the former convent retains the atmosphere of its original spiritual purpose, enriched by a museum display that brings to life one of the most significant chapters in Bitonto’s history.
